OPTICS

Observation Platform for Technological and Institutional Consolidation of research in Safety

OPTICS is a Coordination and Support Action of the European Commission.

OPTICS is delivering a global vision of the aviation safety research landscape, offering strategic recommendations and support to establish safety research priorities.
The main goals of the project are to:

  • Provide a comprehensive overview of EU safety-related research and innovation activities.
  • Assess the contribution of the safety research towards achieving the ACARE Flightpath 2050 goals.
  • Evaluate the overall societal and market impact of the safety research.
  • Develop strategic recommendations on the most important research avenues.

These goals are reached by developing a sustainable and low maintenance “observation platform” to assess relevant aviation safety research both from a technological and economic perspective.
OPTICS will have duration of 48 months and will end in 2017.

The project is structured around four main action lines:

Provide a living repository of Research & Innovation of relevance to aviation safety

OPTICS is performing an extensive survey of relevant R&I activities in the field of aviation safety to establish state of play conditions.
The survey results are published in a repository tracing the activities and main results of research and innovation.

Assess the capability of safety research and innovation to deliver Flightpath 2050 goals

Coverage and progress of research and innovation related to aviation safety are assessed against the expectations of the ACARE SRIA, progress and impediments to deliver the Flightpath 2050 goals.
OPTICS reports annually and provides recommendations regarding promising research avenues for consideration by aviation stakeholders and policy deciders.

Identify impediments which hamper progress

The methodologies developed by OPTICS provide a framework which facilitates the identification of barriers which hamper or prevent progress of research and innovation in the delivery of the Flightpath 2050 goals.

Assess the socio-economic impact of research and innovation in aviation safety

The OPTICS assessment framework is extended to address the impact of safety research and innovation outcomes, providing indicators and metrics to determine the societal and market benefits.
